What to look out for in a city dog:
- Size: A small to medium-sized dog is best suited to an apartment in the city or a smaller house. Due to limited space, it is often more practical to have a dog that doesn’t take up too much room.
- Adaptability: An ideal city dog can adapt well to different environments and noises. He is able to deal with traffic noise, crowds, loud noises and other urban stimuli without becoming anxious or stressed.
- Socialization: In city life, it is important that the dog is well socialized and remains calm even in the presence of strangers and animals. It should be friendly and good-natured and get along well with other dogs, passers-by and ideally also with children.
- Activity: Although exercise is important for every dog, dogs with a lower activity level are better suited to city life than very active four-legged friends. A dog that is happy with shorter walks and occasional playtime can adapt better to the hustle and bustle of city life.
- Trainability: In many places in the city, dogs must be kept on a lead. An ideal dog for the city should therefore easily learn to walk well on a lead. A city dog should have no problem standing next to its owner without pulling on the lead or showing aggressive behavior. In addition, the dog must know basic obedience commands and respond reliably to them to ensure that it behaves safely in urban environments.
- Calmness: A city dog must be patient and calm. It does not react quickly to stress or overstimulation and is able to remain calm and relaxed even in busy places.
Regardless of the breed or age of the dog you choose, you should make sure that you have enough time in your daily routine to meet the dog’s individual needs and give it the care and attention it requires, including daily walks and regular visits to the vet.
