What do you need to look out for?
- Territoriality: An ideal guard dog has strong territorial behavior and wants to protect his home and family. He is immediately alerted when strangers approach his territory and indicates this by barking loudly or other behavior.
- Courage: A guard dog must be courageous and determined to deter potential threats. He shows no hesitation or fear when it comes to defending his family and territory.
- Alertness: An ideal watchdog is always alert and constantly observes its surroundings. It can react very quickly if it senses suspicious noises or activities and reacts accordingly.
- Intelligence: The dog must be intelligent and able to learn quickly to distinguish between a real threat and normal everyday noises or harmless situations.
- Loyalty: A guard dog has a strong bond with its family and is extremely loyal. It wants to protect its family at all times and has complete trust in them. At the same time, however, it is good-natured and friendly towards members of the family and people it knows.
- Good social behavior: A guard dog must be able to behave appropriately towards strangers and animals. Although he is suspicious of strangers, he must not be overly aggressive or uncontrollable. His job is to report intruders by barking. Good socialization and training are important to ensure that the guard dog behaves appropriately at all times.
Regardless of the breed or age of the dog you choose, you should make sure that you have enough time in your daily routine to meet the dog’s individual needs and give it the care and attention it requires, including daily walks and regular visits to the vet.
