The Appenzell Mountain Dog is a typical farm dog in Switzerland. Its job is to herd the cattle and guard the farm.

Appenzell Mountain Dogs have a short, smooth coat that is usually black or brown, with white and brown markings on the legs, chest and face.

Appenzellers are known for their strong, muscular build as well as their stamina and agility. These dogs are very active and need plenty of exercise and activity to stay happy and healthy. Appenzeller Mountain Dogs are therefore best suited to active people who like to spend a lot of time outdoors.

Appenzell Mountain Dogs have a strong protective instinct and are extremely loyal to their owners. They are also very intelligent and easy to train.
