The Dachshund, also known as the basset hound or dachshund, is known for its short legs and long, lean body. Dachshunds also typically have long floppy ears and a muscular build.
Dachshunds come in different sizes. A distinction is also made between short-haired, long-haired and rough-haired dachshunds. All Dachshunds generally have a short, shiny and dense coat in various colors, including black, brown, red and mackerel (merle). White patches of fur are also permitted in the American Dachshund variety.
Dachshunds are considered loyal and affectionate. They build up a close relationship with their owners. Dachshunds have a strong self-confidence and can sometimes be stubborn, but they are also intelligent and capable of learning. Overall, they are energetic and robust.
Dachshunds have a strong hunting instinct and are often used as hunting dogs. They were originally bred for burrow hunting, where the small dogs were supposed to drive badgers and foxes to the surface.
